Removable appliances

Removable braces

This type of brace is less frequently used now that fixed braces have been so widely accepted. They are of limited use as they are able only to tip teeth, and can’t position them precisely.

Often they are used as an initial treatment when patients still have deciduous teeth. Final treatment is usually carried out with fixed braces.

Removable appliances are made of a plastic base with wire clips and springs. They grip on to teeth and can be taken out for cleaning. They should also be removed during sports and when eating. When the brace is removed, it should be put into a container to prevent any loss or damage.

Removable appliance instructions

You have been fitted with a precision made orthodontic appliance. The purpose of the appliance is to improve the form and function of your teeth. The appearance of your teeth and your features will also be improved in the process. This is because beautiful teeth function best and are easier to keep free from plaque, which means they should last a lifetime.

If you observe these following simple rules your active treatment should be completed in about a year and in some cases within a few months.

Wear your appliance 24 hours a day, including mealtimes. It must be removed only for cleaning or when playing sports and swimming. It may also be removed for eating if you are experiencing acute discomfort.

If you are unable to wear your appliance because it gets slack, it is too tight, broken, rubs or for any other reason, contact the surgery immediately.

Keep the plaster cast in a safe place and bring it with the appliance should a repair be necessary. If the appliance gets broken but you can still wear it, continue to do so and please keep your next appointment or attend the next surgery session.

Keep your teeth and appliance absolutely clean – remove it after eating, clean it and then replace it. Use Retainer Brite once a week.

Do not eat toffees, chewing gum or boiled sweets and avoid sweet fizzy drinks.

Your appliance will affect your speech for the first few days and you may also experience excessive saliva. This is perfectly normal – simply persevere and these side effects will become less apparent.

If it is necessary to replace your appliance because it broken, lost or you have worn it out, you will need to pay the full cost of a replacement appliance, which will be around £60. Depending on the circumstances a variable rebate may be given by the authorities.
