What is an orthodontist, and why have I been referred by my own dentist?
An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has successfully completed advanced studies in orthodontics.
Your dentist has referred you to us because he feels that you would benefit from orthodontic treatment. They may feel that your teeth are not in the correct position, either by appearance, or by the bite.
The orthodontist may not feel you are ready for treatment yet, and will put you on a list and review your case six or 12 months down the line.
If you are ready for treatment some X-rays will be taken to see how your teeth are growing. Photographs and impressions of your teeth will also be needed.
Orthodontic work can be carried out at any age, although there are advantages to correcting teeth while you are young.
Let your orthodontist decide when the best time for your treatment is.
Why should I be concerned about a bad bite?
A bad bite is quite detrimental to the future of your oral health. Restorations, crowns and bridges are often impossible for a dentist to perform with teeth being repositioned by an orthodontist. Straight teeth are healthier and easier to clean, and therefore more likely to last you a lifetime.
How do orthodontists straighten teeth?
Teeth are suspended in a membrane which is surrounded by bone. When pressure is applied to teeth it causes the membrane to compress on one side and stretch on the other. Bone responds to pressure by dissolving on one side, and rebuilding to fill the space on the other.
Pressure is applied to the teeth by using a variety of orthodontic appliances. The most common is the brace or bracket attached to the teeth and connected by wires.
By gradually tightening the wires the teeth receive the necessary pressure to move them to the right position.
Will this hurt?
When teeth move there is a certain amount of discomfort which usually lasts around 48 hours after the brace has been adjusted. Each adjustment causes minor discomfort, but this will reduce as treatment progresses.
Will I still need to visit my dentist?
Yes, you must still have regular check-ups at your dentist and undergo any treatment you may need from him.
How long will my orthodontic treatment last?
The length of the treatment depends on the individual case. The length of treatment for removable braces will take between six and 12 months, and fixed braces take between 12 and 18 months.
This is a long time, but the results will be fantastic, and well worth it in the long run. During treatment you will need to visit your orthodontist every four to eight weeks for your appliance to be readjusted.
