When considering orthodontic treatment for yourself or your child, you’ll likely have some questions. Luckily for you - we have the answers! Here are the answers to the most common questions we’ve encountered at our practice.
Orthodontics specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. We use braces, aligners and other appliances to correct tooth alignment.
Crooked teeth can be from genetics - we inherit our mouth and jaw structure from our parents. However, local factors, such as finger or pacifier sucking, high cavity rate, gum disease, trauma and premature loss of baby teeth can also contribute to a bad bite.
The benefits of teeth straightening are extensive. Not only is it easier to clean your teeth, you also lessen the odds of gum disease or tooth decay. Treatment also fixes bad bites, which improves your chewing ability and, therefore, your digestion and overall health.
Braces align your teeth by applying steady, gentle pressure. Dr Schuth will attach brackets to each of your teeth and thread an archwire through the brackets. The wire will be expertly bent to apply targeted pressure that guides your teeth into the proper alignment.
Yes, no one is too old for a beautiful smile! In fact, 20% of orthodontic patients are adults.
We recommend that your child gets an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. An early consultation is crucial to determining the best time to begin orthodontic treatment. Your child could enjoy a healthier smile for a lifetime if you begin treatment as soon as possible.
The length of treatment depends on the complexity of your orthodontic problem. The average treatment time is 27 months, but complex issues can take longer. However, if you follow Dr Schuth’s instructions and take care of your braces, your alignment will improve.
No, braces shouldn’t hurt you. You can expect to feel some mild soreness and discomfort for two to three days after every adjustment —but nothing an over-the-counter pain reliever can’t fix.
Yes, it’s a must! You need retainers to maintain and stabilise the alignment of your teeth after treatment. If you don’t wear retainers as instructed, your teeth will likely move or relapse.
It depends. Your orthodontic treatment will be based on the severity of your problem and the treatment complexity and duration. At your free consultation, we can provide you with an estimate for treatment, as well as discuss our payment plans to make it more affordable.
