NHS treatment

Trinity House Orthodontics is one of the largest providers of NHS treatment in Yorkshire. We work closely with dentists and other health authorities in the local area to ensure that waiting lists are as short as possible.

NHS treatment with Trinity House Orthodontics is currently available at our Barnsley and Selby practices.

NHS treatment requirements

Those under 18 years of age may be able to receive treatment on the NHS. We will determine eligibility using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). If a patient qualifies, there will be a waiting period before treatment with metal braces can begin.

NHS new patient journey

Here is the process of receiving treatment under the NHS at Trinity House Orthodontics.

STAGE 1: Your new patient appointment letter

If your general dentist thinks you may benefit from orthodontic treatment, they will refer you to us for an orthodontic assessment. After receiving your general dentist’s letter of referral, we will send you your appointment details with a welcome pack!

STAGE 2: New patient assessment appointment

To determine if you need orthodontic treatment, we will carry out a detailed review of your teeth and jaws to see if you are eligible for NHS treatment. We will make digital models of your teeth and take x-rays and photographs as needed.

STAGE 3: Treatment plan waiting list

This stage usually lasts around 12 to 18 months. At this appointment, you will meet with Dr Schuth to discuss your assessment and treatment path.

Even if you don’t meet NHS criteria, we can still treat you as a private patient. We will be happy to discuss your treatment options with you - including the flexible finance plans we offer to help make orthodontic treatment affordable.

STAGE 4: NHS waiting list

If you qualify for treatment under the NHS, you will be placed on the waiting list. NHS treatment is very popular, and we can only treat a limited number of NHS patients each year. For the most recent waiting list time, please ask our staff members.

Let us know if you would like to begin your orthodontic treatment immediately, and we can speak with you about our private treatment options. This way, we can also give you access to a wider range of treatment options.

STAGE 5: Treatment begins

It typically takes 18 to 24 months for your treatment to produce the desired result. However, treatment times might vary because every patient has different orthodontic needs. Therefore, we will need to see you every 6 to 8 weeks throughout your treatment to track your progress.

After straightening your teeth, we’ll remove your braces and give you retainers that will hold your newly straightened teeth in place. We call this phase the retention phase, and it is an integral part of your treatment!
